Excused and Unexcused Absences

The following are considered excused absences:

  • Personal illness.
  • A serious illness or death in a student’s immediate family.
  • Due to court order or order by a government agency.
  • Observation of a religious holiday.
  • Conditions rendering attendance impossible or hazardous to student health or safety.
  • Due to deployment or leave of a student’s parent or guardian who is in the armed forces, for up to five days in a school year.
  • To attend military-sponsored events for a parent or guardian in the armed forces, up to five days pers school year.
  • Registering or voting in a public election, but absences may not exceed one day.
  • Other absences deemed to have merit under the circumstance and approved in advance by the Superintendent or School Director.

Where appropriate, CCA may, at is sole discretion, require documentation to substantiate any and/or all of the above circumstances to determine an absence as excused.  Failure to provide documentation upon request will result in an absence being marked as unexcused.

Early release or check-ins due to medical appointments must be submitted the next day or will remain unexcused.

The following, even with parental consent, are considered unexcused absences: Truancies, vacations, travel time that extends beyond a permissible religious holiday, working, missing the bus, oversleeping, shopping, car not starting, keeping personal appointments, visiting out- of-town (unless excused prior to absence), college visits (unless excused prior to absence), needed at home (unless excused prior to absence), and other avoidable absences. If there is doubt about whether an absence will be considered excused or unexcused, check in advance with the Superintendent or School Director. No credit will be given for work missed due to an unexcused absence. However, students must make up all work to meet their educational needs. Mastery Assignments, those counting towards Final averages, must be made up during Saturday School.

In accordance with state law, if a student is away from school during the school day for any of the following reasons, he/she will be counted as present, rather than excused or unexcused absent:

  • Serving as a page for the Georgia General Assembly.
  • Participating in an activity or program sponsored by 4-H.
  • A foster care student attending court proceedings relating to the student’s foster care; or
  • Successfully participating in the Student Teen Election Participant (STEP) program, but present participation may not exceed two school days per year.

Where appropriate, CCA may require documentation of participation in these events.
